MID NIGHT MARCH
[05th January, 2013]
Radha's Vishva Sevak Foundation organized MID NIGHT MARCH on 05th JANUARY, 2013 on Tank bund ay Hyderabad in support to women's safety in society at night. Ninety percent or more of women in INDIA have gone through various degree of sexual harassment in public places as well as in our homes, from being yelled obscenities, on streets, to being grabbed in bus to domestic violence to henious rape assaults. These crimes against women, children and transgender happen in every space and the night space makes us particularly vulnerable. We need to protest against such violence at every step.
We have been taught that venturing out in the night means inviting trouble, for a long time we've obeyed the rules and stayed indoors while men have the liberty to roam freely at night. Those of us who do venture out to clean the street, to work in constructions, to work in call centers, to get back home after late night class or an evening out amongst other things - face the possibility of harassment, abuse and violence. Society more often than not sanction this abuse by blaming us for inviting trouble. If we tolerate all this for fear or belief, we will face more violence. As long as we are scared and submit, the abuse will continue.
We should continue to fight against abuse and do it more rigorously. We need to assert ourselves, our rights and our spaces and disobey the rules that chained us unless, we get out and calm our rights we will never be safe, not on the streets and not in our homes. One step in claiming the nights is by walking collectively and sending a strong message. Our message is we want the night, we want it safe, we deserve to be respected at day and night.
ONE BILLION RISING
[14th February, 2013]
Radha's Vishva Sevak Foundation was a part of ONE BILLION RISING, which was the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The campaign launched on Valentine's Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime, with the world population at billion at 7 billion, this adds upto more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.
On 14 February 2013, people across the world came together to express their outrage, strike, dance and rise in defence of the injustice women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
Last year, on 14 February 2014, ONE BILLION RISING for justice, focused on the issue of justice for all survivors of gender violence. Events took place in 200 countries, where women, men and youth came together to school administration buildings, work places, sites of environmental injustice, military courts, embassies, places of worship, homes and public gathering places where women deserve to feel dare but too often do not.
The campaign was covered widely by media in all corners of the World including The New York Times, The Guardian, NPR, NDTV 24X7, Aaj Tak, The Hindu, Times of India and many more.
MIRROR MOB
[08th March, 2014]
Radha's Vishva Sevak Foundation organized MIRROR MOB on 08th MARCH, 2014 across Hyderabad in support to women's safety in society.
Every day, Indian women are violently harassed on streets, buses and other public spaces. They are teased, groped, propositioned and intimidated - but nothing is done to stem the abuse, despite laws against it. Women are usually blamed for "bringing it upon themselves". But what if women harassed men instead? On International Women's Day (08th March, 2014), Radha's Vishva Sevak Foundation organised Mirror Mob, a blend of street theatre and Freeze Mob, an experiment hich turned harassment inside-out.
At bus stops and train stations across Hyderabad, women pushed, tripped and made lewd comments at men (and don't worry, the men were in on it too). We then asked onlookers why they thought street harassment existed, and why they were surprised to see men face abuse when women have to deal with it every day. Some of them argued with us, others came forward with their own stories; many reconsidered old prejudices about street harassment. We tried to invert the conventional wisdom on street harassment, and we'll keep fighting the patriarchy that enables it.
